Rory McIlroy has topped up his astonishing net worth despite narrowly missing out on winning the US Open in the worst possible way.

The Northern Irishman missed out on his first major trophy since the PGA Championship of 2014 at the weekend despite leading Bryson DeChambeau by two strokes with five holes to play. Missed par putts on the 16th and 18th holes would allow the all-American to overtake McIlroy and deny him from putting a ten-year drought to bed.

Meanwhile, DeChambeau's US Open victory at the weekend comes as his second major win in four years - after winning the US Open in 2020 at Wingerd Foot in Mamaroneck, New York.

Despite finishing as a runner up, McIlroy managed to bolster his net worth substantially - taking home a $2.32million (£1.83million) consolation prize for his efforts. According to the Sunday Times' Rich List, McIlroy had an astonishing net worth of£225million prior to the tournament.

He's now bolstered that by almost £2million, although that will be no consolation to the Northern Irishman after his collapse in North Carolina on Sunday night.McIlroy is said to have earned more than £65million alone in 2023, with a large portion coming from sponsorship deals through Nike, TaylorMade and Omega.

If he'd have won the US Open at the weekend, however, he would have added $4,300,000 (£3,392,270) to his career earnings - the prize that 30-year-old DeChambeau took home.

Three bogeys in McIlroy's last four holes would lead to his downfall at the weekend's US Open - two of those which in the form of short putt misses for par. The pro could only watch with despair as DeChambeau putted from around four feet himself to secure the tournament, before retreating to the locker room with his caddie.

Since his fourth major victory at the 2014 US PGA Championship, McIlroy has only managed to finish second or tied second at four majors. He has also achieved 21 top-10 finishes at major championships since his last victory, unable to secure wins at the top level.

It is believed that he bypassed the presentation ceremony at Pinehurst on Sunday while avoiding any media interaction. Footage on social media showed McIlroy making a quick exit after DeChambeau's win, prompting division on social media.

DeChambeau only had kind words to say about his beaten opponent in his press conference. "He'll win multiple more major championships. There's no doubt," said DeChambeau. "I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow."

"For him to miss that putt, I'd never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way," he concluded.
