At 13 years old, after his brother passed away, Burton started playing bass guitar. While in high school at Castro Valley High, he started a band called EZ-Street. Later, when he was at Chabot College in Hayward, California, Burton formed another band called Agents of Misfortune. He teamed up with guitarist Jim Martin in both bands.

Burton won and picked Kirk Hammett's bunk, while Hammett slept in the front. Because the bunks didn't have seatbelts, Burton was thrown out of a bus window during the crash. Hetfield said the crash happened because the bus driver was drunk, but this was never proven.
Legacy
For the fourth album by Metallica called "...And Justice for All," the band wrote a special song called "To Live is to Die" as a tribute to Burton. They even gave him credit for helping write the song. Bands like Megadeth, Anthrax, and Metal Church also made songs and albums in memory of Burton.
